I got boned over the custody of my first daughter when it went to court (she was 1) and her dad was awarded the primary physical custody. At the time his parents paid for his lawyer and i was left high and dry without representation due to lack of funds. Since then we've both married other people, but it still kills me when I think of someone else playing mommy to my little girl. We returned to court, but it only resulted in more tension between her dad and I, no change in custody.
Now, things aren't as bad as they use to be (she's 4 now), and we've found a schedule that works fairly well for the both of our families, but i still get upset sometimes when i think about everything, and how badly I got screwed. Even though I was supporting myself and he lived with his parents, had no job and no driver's license yet, he was the most fit parent?
So, how common/uncommon is it that a hardworking, loving mother would get so royally screwed in the legal system? Why didn't the court appoint a lawyer for you ? That is your right to representation . I'm sorry to hear that you were railroaded . My ex and i share joint custidy of our daughter but i have physically placement with her and he see's her every other weekend! we fought mostly over the child support! I sometimes wonder if I should pursue a career in law to help those less able to. My husband is going through a tough situation with his exwife through the courts in Michigan. Sometimes the court system is unfair and wrong. My best bet would be to find a good attorney in the state this took place in. Perhaphs work on a payment arrangement so it doesnt put a financial strain on you. Sometimes, although its a shame, it takes money to correct the wrong doings of the law. Good luck on this issue.
