16 yr old wants to change custody in MD...joint custody involved.?

My 16 yr old step-daughter has notified my husband and I that she wants to live with us permanently. There is currently a joint physical custody court order in place. How can we help her? How can she prepare to go up against her mother (who will never agree) in front of a judge? She is VERY intimidated (scared) by (of) her mother.

Is a lawyer needed or necessary or can she represent herself?

How much value is there in the child's request for change of custody in comparison to the mother not agreeing?

Finally, she has a 14 1/2 year old sibling. Will the judge look at this and not allow the custody change to take place?

Thank you in advance for all that answer.16 yr old wants to change custody in MD...joint custody involved.?I would highly recommend getting her a lawyer if it comes to court, but before court a mediator can be a wonderful tool, with a mediator she can sit in a seperate room from her mother while the mediator runs back and forth between the two parties and works out an amicable agreement before going into court.

It will help her prepare herself for court, prepare what her arguments will be and understand what her mothers arguments will be. Also since she does not have to face her mother directly in mediation it will be a huge confidence booster. Lastly it gives both parties the opportunity to come to an agreement before court so when you face the judge all parties are on the same page and the judge just has to sign the documents and knock around a gavel.16 yr old wants to change custody in MD...joint custody involved.?Thank you Dragonladyofwater. I didn't think of the mediator. I do want to ask why we need an agreement drawn for the judge. Do you mean for visitation?
